How I Transformed Our Laundry Room into a Space I Actually Love
If you had told me a few years ago that I’d enjoy spending time in the laundry room, I probably would’ve laughed. Laundry has never been my favorite chore—especially with two daughters, ages 9 and 5, and a husband who always seems to find the muddiest paths on a hike. But after countless hours spent folding, sorting, and battling mystery stains, I decided it was time to turn our dreary laundry room into a space I actually loved.
It wasn’t about making laundry fun (let’s be honest, that’s asking too much), but about creating a space that felt functional, organized, and dare I say, beautiful. Here’s how I did it without breaking the bank.

Starting with a Vision
When I started this project, I knew I wanted the laundry room to feel less like a chore-filled dungeon and more like an extension of our home. I dreamed of a space that was bright, cheerful, and organized—somewhere I wouldn’t mind spending an hour or two.
My husband thought I was being overly ambitious, but I assured him this would be a project worth tackling. Together, we brainstormed ideas while the girls chimed in with (adorable) suggestions like “add a candy machine” and “make it pink!”
Decluttering and Maximizing Space
The first step was tackling the clutter. Our laundry room had become a dumping ground for mismatched socks, random cleaning supplies, and even some forgotten toys. I pulled everything out and only kept the essentials.
To maximize the small space, I added storage solutions:
• Wall-mounted shelves: These freed up floor space and gave me easy access to detergent, fabric softener, and stain removers.
• Baskets and bins: Each family member now has a bin for their clean clothes, making sorting and folding much easier.
• Hooks and rods: I installed a rod for air-drying delicate items and hooks for stray bags or cleaning cloths.
Even my 9-year-old was impressed, saying, “It looks like a real grown-up room now!”

Choosing a Color Palette
One of the biggest transformations came from simply painting the walls. I opted for a soft, calming blue that instantly brightened the space. It felt clean and fresh—everything a laundry room should be.
I paired the blue walls with white cabinets and natural wood accents for a cozy, farmhouse-inspired vibe. The girls helped me pick out some peel-and-stick wallpaper for the inside of the cabinets—a playful floral pattern that always makes me smile when I open them.
Adding Personal Touches
To make the space feel more “me,” I added a few personal touches:
• Artwork: I hung a framed print that says, “Laundry today or naked tomorrow.” It makes me laugh every time I see it.
• A small plant: A little greenery made the room feel alive and less utilitarian.
• Family photos: I added a small collage of candid moments with my husband and daughters to remind me why I’m folding endless piles of clothes in the first place.
Making It Functional and Efficient
The laundry room isn’t just pretty now—it works better for us, too. I made a few small but impactful changes:
• A folding station: My husband helped me build a counter above the washer and dryer, giving me a dedicated space to fold clothes.
• A labeled hamper system: We now have separate hampers for whites, darks, and delicates, which has made sorting a breeze. Even my 5-year-old is excited to help!
• Better lighting: I replaced the dull overhead light with a bright, energy-efficient fixture that makes the space feel warm and inviting.

Turning It into a Family-Friendly Space
What surprised me most about this transformation was how much the girls love the new laundry room. My 9-year-old enjoys sorting clothes (she calls it her “laundry mission”), and my 5-year-old loves helping me load the washer.
We even added a small chalkboard on the wall where they draw pictures or write funny notes while I’m working. It’s turned a boring chore into a moment of connection and fun for all of us.
What I’ve Learned About Transforming Small Spaces
This project taught me that even the most overlooked spaces in your home can become places you enjoy. By focusing on functionality, adding personal touches, and involving the whole family, I turned a room I used to avoid into one I genuinely appreciate.
Now, when I walk into our laundry room, I don’t feel dread—I feel a sense of calm and accomplishment. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the little changes make the biggest difference.
So, if you’ve been avoiding your laundry room, take it from me: it’s worth the effort. Who knows? You might even find yourself smiling as you fold that never-ending pile of socks.
