Why Hosting Family Game Nights Became Our Best Stress Reliever
Life can get hectic. Between work, school activities, and keeping up with our 9- and 5-year-old daughters, there’s never a dull moment in our household. LOL! While we wouldn’t trade the chaos for anything, we realized we needed a way to slow down, reconnect, and just enjoy each other’s company. That’s when we decided to start hosting family game nights—and it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
What started as a simple way to unwind has quickly become our favorite stress reliever and one of the most meaningful traditions in our home. Here’s why family game nights have been such a game-changer for us.

Unplugging from the World
One of the biggest benefits of game night is that it forces us to step away from our screens. No phones, no TV, no distractions—just us, a board game, and a lot of laughter.
After long days filled with work emails, school assignments, and social media, it’s refreshing to disconnect from the digital world and focus on each other. Even my husband, who’s often glued to his laptop for work, looks forward to these evenings as a much-needed break.
Bringing Laughter Back into the House
If there’s one thing family game nights guarantee, it’s laughter. Whether it’s my husband accidentally drawing something unrecognizable in Pictionary, or our 5-year-old proudly shouting out hilarious answers during charades, game night never fails to lighten the mood. One of our favorite memories is when we played Uno for the first time with the girls.
Building Connection Through Teamwork
Some of our favorite games are ones that require us to work together, like Codenames or Forbidden Island. Collaborating as a family not only makes the games more fun, but it also strengthens our bond.
Watching our daughters strategize together or cheer each other on reminds me how much they’re growing—and how much they care for each other. Game night has given them opportunities to build teamwork skills in a way that feels fun and effortless.

Learning (Without Even Realizing It)
What surprised me most about game night was how much the girls have learned from it. From counting money in Monopoly Junior to practicing spelling in Scrabble, the games we play have become a sneaky way to make learning fun.
Our 5-year-old now loves matching games and puzzles, while our 9-year-old enjoys word and trivia games that challenge her growing vocabulary. It’s been amazing to see their confidence grow while they’re simply having fun.
Creating Traditions and Memories
Game night has become a tradition we all look forward to, and the memories we’ve created are priceless. From pizza dinners eaten around the game table to the inside jokes that come from hours of play, these evenings have become a cornerstone of our family life.
One of my favorite memories is the time we turned game night into a tournament, complete with a homemade scoreboard. The girls even made “trophies” out of construction paper for the winners (spoiler: everyone got a prize).
Teaching Life Skills
Beyond the fun and laughter, game night has also been a great way to teach our daughters important life skills. They’ve learned how to take turns, handle losing gracefully, and celebrate each other’s wins.
Our 9-year-old has become a pro at strategizing, while our 5-year-old is working on her patience and attention span. And as parents, it’s been a great reminder for us to model good sportsmanship and positivity.
Relieving Stress for Everyone
Life can be stressful, even for kids. Schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and everyday worries can sometimes overwhelm our daughters. Game night gives all of us a chance to decompress, focus on the present, and simply enjoy being together.
For me, there’s nothing more relaxing than hearing the sound of my family’s laughter echo through the house. It’s a reminder that no matter how busy or stressful life gets, there’s always time to reconnect and recharge.
How to Start Your Own Family Game Night
If you’ve been thinking about starting a family game night, my advice is simple: just do it! You don’t need fancy games or a big setup. Here’s what worked for us:
• Pick a consistent day: We chose Friday evenings, which feels like the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
• Start with simple games: Classics like Uno, Jenga, and Connect Four are great for all ages.
• Make it fun: We often add snacks, music, or themed nights to keep things fresh.
• Let everyone choose: Each week, a different family member gets to pick the game. This keeps things fair and ensures everyone is excited to participate.
What Family Game Night Has Taught Us
Hosting family game nights has reminded us of what matters most—spending time together. It’s not about the games themselves, but about the laughter, connection, and love that fill our home during those moments.
As a family, we’ve learned to slow down, appreciate each other, and find joy in the simplest of activities. And for me, those moments of togetherness are the ultimate stress reliever.
If you’re looking for a way to unwind and reconnect as a family, I can’t recommend game night enough. It’s more than just a way to pass the time—it’s a way to build memories that will last a lifetime.
