Signs It Is Time to Focus on Your Mental Health

Neglecting your health when you’re wound up in life is easy. You get a few aches and pains here and there, but you ignore them, thinking they’ll pass. This is until you suddenly find yourself in the ER, being treated for something you could have prevented. Scared yet? If you haven’t reached this point yet, it’s a good sign, as long as you ensure you care more for your health and wellness.

You’re Experiencing Frequent Illness

You spike fevers. You get dizzy and nauseous. You can’t stomach your food. You lose your appetite and suddenly pick it up with no discernible pattern. You get headaches, ear pains, and stuffy nose without any visible cause. Sometimes, our physical illnesses aren’t because of the weather but because of a decline in our mental health. Getting checked out at least biannually is essential to ensure you’re healthy as a nut.

You Feel Constantly Tired

Your eyes feel droopy all the time. You want to sleep, even though you’ve just slept plenty of hours. You feel like everything around you is exhausting, even when lying in bed. It’s like taking a day or two off won’t even fix it, as if you’re always going to be drained and exhausted. This is a sign that your body is burnt out and needs to relax. Otherwise, you might experience irreversible health issues.

You Skip Regular Doctor’s Appointments

We know going to the doctor isn’t always the easiest. You either have a ton of work to do or can’t afford it, so you miss regular doctor’s appointments. And while we do sympathize, we can’t stress enough how important it is to keep up with your medical checkups. Annual checkups not only keep you updated about your health, but it’ll be much easier for you to prevent certain illnesses when you’re on top of your shape.

You’ve Gained Or Lost Weight Rapidly

Many sicknesses and illnesses manifest themselves with a common symptom: the sudden loss or gain of weight. Sudden fluctuations in your weight are a sign that your body is no longer coping well with the exhaustion it experiences. While weight fluctuations aren’t always because of a serious illness, ignoring them might escalate the situation. Even something as basic as an iron deficiency can become serious if left unchecked.

Your Diet Consists Mostly Of Processed Foods

We might sound like we’re playing the old age ‘fast food isn’t good’ card, but the theory rings true. Many processed foods (not necessarily fast food) contain high levels of saturated fats and sugar, putting you at risk for issues like diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. They’re also filled with preservatives, so you aren’t eating healthy at all.

You Rarely Exercise Or Stay Active

Going to the gym isn’t always an option, especially when you’re often tied up at work. But if you rarely exercise or keep yourself active, you’re going to get sicker. This is because your body will normalize the lack of activity, so it’ll start to get weaker and slower day by day. When this happens, you won’t be able to do anything because the minute you try to play sports or exercise, your body will panic and get tired before you even start.

Your Sleep Patterns Are Erratic

You lose the sense of a sound sleep cycle. You either stay awake until dawn or sleep through your alarm. You’ll feel incredibly sleepy, but when you finally lay in bed, you’ll toss and turn, unable to sleep. You’ll wake up crankier than ever because you jolt awake at the slightest movement when you do fall asleep. You develop an erratic sleep cycle and can’t get the rest you need.

You Rely On Caffeine Or Sugar For Energy

Speaking of missing out on rest, once you lose your precious sleep, your body loses its chance to energize. This means you slowly start losing your passion and energy and fall deeper into a cycle of exhaustion. But since stopping isn’t an option, you turn to other alternatives like caffeine or sugar to keep yourself afloat. Only this worsens your anxiety and makes you more prone to sudden health flare-ups.

You Ignore Minor Aches And Pains

Does your shoulder hurt from time to time? Does your back hurt until you lie down at a weird angle? Do you get a sudden pang in your chest that hurts even when you breathe in? Many of us experience minor aches and pains like this and often ignore them because we think they’re not that serious. But if you’re continuously experiencing unexplained minor aches and pains and continue ignoring them, you might be overlooking an underlying issue.

You Struggle To Manage Stress

You know you’re stressed, and you know you need to do something about it. But is it as easy as it looks? No. You struggle to manage stress because even the idea of taking a short break freaks you out. Knowing you’ll have to come back to a bigger pile at work prevents you from managing your stress, so you continue working and pushing yourself despite knowing it isn’t sustainable.

When was the last time you took a day off? And we don’t mean just taking the day off, but actually getting to relax and treat yourself to a spa. Many of us take the day off but spend those hours doing chores and pending repairs instead. We miss out on the chance to relax, grab a glass of wine, and cozy up against a fireplace. You need a break if you can’t remember the last time you relaxed.
